Translational research, the junction between basic and clinical research, allows discoveries generated in the laboratory to become innovations in health care. Brown and its teaching hospitals are incubators for this kind of research.

The Division of Surgical Research is the locus of all basic science and translational research in the Department of Surgery. Research in the Division is carried out by faculty focused on elucidating the mechanisms of inflammation and the responses to trauma and sepsis. Work is conducted at the molecular, cellular, systems and organismal levels.
