Visiting Students Enrolled in US Medical Schools
Inquiries are welcome from students currently attending other U.S. medical schools who wish to participate in our Clinical Elective Programs. We are unable to accept requests for a basic (required) clerkship experience in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry Family Medicine, or Community Health. If you are coming from an international medical school, please refer to the process for international students.
Acceptance for an elective is made on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority in scheduling electives is given to Brown students up until May 15 of each year. Applications for the next academic year (these include periods of time beyond the calendar linked here, will be accepted after mid-March). Please be advised that there is a $100 application fee (per elective). Please adhere to our schedule of dates (see calendar). Since the availability of particular electives vary, I suggest that you request alternative electives and/or dates.
We will not accept applications more than six months prior to the start date of the rotation.
We expect visiting students to honor their commitment once they have been accepted to participate in an elective. Please note when requesting a "restricted elective" - advanced clerkships in medicine (333), surgery (418 or 419), pediatrics (463); - these electives cannot be cancelled once confirmed. All visiting students must be covered by malpractice or personal liability and health insurance and must submit proof of immunizations with their application. A maximum of three months (12 weeks) may be spent in clinical electives at Brown University. There is no tuition charge for a student who is enrolled in good standing at his/her U.S. medical school.
The availability of housing is variable and cannot be guaranteed. See Office of Rental Facilities.
The Clerkship Assistant, Lori Avallone is available via phone at 401-863-1580 or via email at Lori_Avallone@Brown.edu.
