American Dermatological Assoc. Medical Student Fellowship Program

The ADA is offering a $700 monthly stipend for a maximum of three months beginning on June 1, 2009 for medical students seeking to work in a department or division of dermatology. The work can be done at a university of college in the US or Canada.

American Pediatric Society and Society for Pediatric Research Student Research Program

Betty Ford Summer Institute for Medical Students

This is a unique learning experience to gain understanding and insight into addictive disease and recovery. The Summer Institute offers three placements for students:
1. Inpatient Treatment: Participate in Inpatient Treatment and be assigned to a residence hall to join patients in lectures, group therapy sessions, physical activity therapy, groups and meals.
2. Residential Day Treatment: Participate in a program that addresses the needs of professionals who work in safety-sensitive jobs (pilots, physicians, nurses, attorneys) or who need extended treatment in a structures setting. Students follow patients participating in most aspects of care.
3. Family Program: Students will spend five days with family members of chemically dependent people. This helps family members see how they have been impacted by addiction and assist in finding ways to improve their lives.
All programs begin on Monday at 7:00am and end at 4:30pm on Friday at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, CA. All selected students will receive a scholarship to cover tuition, travel, lodging, meals and materials.

Family Medicine Summer Externship

Akron City Hospital is offering a three-week Family Medicine summer externship for M1 and M2 medical students. This externship offers clinical experience in the full spectrum of patient care managed by Family Medicine: Geriatrics, pediatrics, obstetrics, sports medicine, preventive care, and manipulative medicine. Two sessions are available from either July 6-24, 2009 or July 27-August 14, 2009. Students will receive a $600 stipend and free housing and food.

Family Medicine Summer Externship

Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics

The FASPE fellowship is a fully funded program for students designed to address contemporary ethical issues through a unique historical context. Sponsored by the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the two-week fellowship initially focuses on the role of the medical profession in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust and uses this as a framework for contemporary ethical issues. Following an introduction in New York, the fellows travel to Berlin, Krakow and Oswiecim (Auschwitz).

Global Health Fellows Program in Geneva – Duke Sanford

Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy is offering a Global Health Fellowship in Geneva designed to equip students in fighting HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other health challenges. This program will secure an 8-12 week summer internship in Geneva with WHO, UNAIDS and other NGOs dealing with global health issues. Students are also required to take the "Health Policy in a Globalizing World" course. The Program fee is $2500 which does not include housing, food or airfare.

Global Health Fellows Program in Geneva – Duke Sanford

Harvard Global Health Effectiveness Program

This program will train public health leaders, students and physicians through a curriculum of epidemiology, management science and global health delivery case teaching, enabling them to effectively design and manage programs that improve health outcomes for the populations they serve. The program from July 1-24, 2009 in Boston, MA will consist of two credit-granting courses and one seminar taught by senior Harvard faculty.
Eligible Applicants: Should demonstrate commitment to global health and experience in global health organizations, with a background in healthcare or a related field. Tuition and fees for the courses will total approximately $4,400.

Injury Research Program for Medical Students Summer 2009

Student have the opportunity to work at the Nationwide Children's Hospital in the Center for Injury Research and Policy in Columbus, Ohio. Participants in the Injury Research Program will learn important research, statistical and data analysis skills, learn how to write a scientific manuscript and complete a manuscript as a first author based on research and submit for publication. Students will work 40 hours/week from June 15 – August 7, 2009. Each selected student will receive a $3,500 stipend and free housing within walking distance.

Israel Medical Ethics Summer Fellowship

The New England Institute of Jewish Studies is sponsoring a four week summer program, combining the study of medical ethics, Jewish thought and tours of Israel. The purpose of the program is to enable Jewish medical students to explore Jewish approaches to challenging medical issues confronting health care professionals. Tuition, lodging and tours for the program cost $3,100. Airfare and meals are not included in this fee. The Maimonides Scholars Fellowship can aware up to $2,400 based upon merit and financial need.

Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program

The St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is offering a NIH/NCI-funded 9 week program for students who wish to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. Students will participate in basic or clinical oncology research, research and clinical conferences and a core lecture series designed specifically for them. Students will receive an $8.00/hour salary and free group housing outside the Memphis metropolitan area.

Simon Kramer Society Externship in Radiation Oncology

This award provides medical students a six-week, summer experience in Radiation Oncology. This opportunity lets students develop a foundation of the clinical knowledge applied to the field of cancer therapy, understanding treatment planning rationales and grasp active areas of research and controversy. The student will observe and assist in the follow-up clinic and treatment area and be encouraged to be involved with research projects. A stipend of $1,500 will be offered.

The NIH offers paid internships for summer clinical research. The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Summer Fellowship

Student Summer Fellowship grants are awarded for research and/or service in community health and cultural competency issues. The goal of this foundation is to providence students with the opportunity to work with directly with patients. This provides up to $3,000 for a ten-week project in which a student works directly with a mentor. A final report is due at the end of the ten-weeks, although the project should have the potential to be on-going. Medical students may apply for either the Research Fellowship or the Service Fellowship program.

Albert Schweitzer Fellowship

Four Year III medical students can spend three months working in West Africa at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarιnι, Gabon on clinical rotations. Fellows will work as junior physicians and spend the full rotation on either the Pediatrics or Medicine service. Fellows will be asked to serve from either May 1 – July 31, 2010 or August 1 – October 31, 2010 (dates are not flexible). Public Health fellows are also accepted.

Benjamin H. Kean Traveling Fellowship in Tropical Medicine

The ASTMH will provide travel expenses for medical students who arrange clinical tropical medicine or tropical medicine research electives in areas afflicted by tropical diseases. Round-trip airfare and up to $1000 living expenses will be provided. Applicants must propose a new elective in tropical medicine research or clinical tropical medicine training, which will include at least one month at a site endemic for tropical communicable diseases other than HIV/AIDS. The CDC Experience: Applied Epidemiology Fellowship

This fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia allows hands-on training in epidemiology and public health. Students who have completed either their second or third year of medical school are invited to spend 10-12 months carrying out epidemiological analyses in areas such as birth defects, injury, chronic disease, infectious disease, etc.

This symposium will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. The Silen Award will be honored to participants who deliver outstanding oral presentations and have created exceptional posters.

Annenberg Physician Training Program

Receive addictions training in a four week experiential program where students have the opportunity to be "admitted" to a substance use disorder treatment program. Students are exposed to the "epidemic" through participation in a treatment facility's patient milieu. You will not emulate a physician, but the patient to learn through his or her eyes. Mentors will be available to answer any questions that might arise or work though any issues. Program sites include Betterndorf, IA; Pueblo, CO; Grand Rapids, MI; and Gainesville, FL.

Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellow

The main goal of the program is to encourage medical students to pursue careers in clinical research. Interested medical students must be willing to take a year out from school and conduct fellowship research and training at one of 12 hosting medical schools. Selected students will receive a $27,000 stipend, health insurance, financial support to attend the year-end CRF meetings and supplementary research and training funds.

The research involves clinical applications of high-speed ultrahigh resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT). The student will have the opportunity to design, initiate, and complete clinical studies on the utility of this device in retinal diseases and glaucoma. One-year Research and Training Opportunities at the National Institute of Health

The Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) for Medical and Dental Students is a 12-month program designed to attract fellows to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Fellows will spend a year engaged in a mentored clinical or translational research project in an area that matches their personal interests and goals. Programs are individualized, which include attending clinics, seeing patients on the wards, and working with a principal investigator on selected clinical research projects. Fellows will learn about translational research, attend lectures on clinical research, and participate in an interactive, group learning experience with the members of the class and leading NIH physicians and scientists.

Paul Ambrose Scholars Program

The Paul Ambrose Scholars Program strives to engage medical, graduate physician assistant, graduate nursing, graduate dentistry, and pharmacy student leaders in building new visions, models, and experiences for health professions education. Students are required to participate in two key aspects of the program: a three-day symposium and a project. The symposium features skills-based leadership education and training in prevention and public health content areas such as community organizing; project planning; policy advocacy; health literacy; and health care finance and delivery. Following the symposium, Scholars will be expected to engage in health promotion/disease prevention education projects in their institutions or community. Scholars are also required to enlist a faculty mentor for guidance in the project from their institution. Up to 40 Scholars will be selected. Travel expenses to the Symposium will be covered up to $250, hotel lodging will be provided, and participants will have access to a $200 stipend to assist in implementing projects. Students must have five years of post-secondary education and be studying one of six areas of study listed on the website.

Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation

During the one year (12 month) experience, fellows are responsible for undertaking a research project from inception to completion. An original manuscript is expected to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal and results to be presented at the Foundation's Annual Scientific Meeting. Fellows will be given a $27,500 stipend, funds for travel, health insurance, and travel and conference funds. The area of study consists of a broad view of cardiovascular research.
