Dr. Veronica Petersen '55 and Dr. Robert A. Petersen Educational Enhancement Fund

The Petersen fund supports innovative service or research initiatives designed to have a positive impact on individuals, families, and communities. These projects may positively serve a community by, for example, generating insights into barriers to quality health care or devising a solution to a recognized problem. The Fund encourages students to undertake projects in the United States or abroad that not only will foster their own development and enrich their educational experience but, just as importantly, will enable them to give back to the community at large. Such socially relevant projects embody the Alpert Medical School's mission of producing physicians and scientists who view medicine as a human service profession, as well as its tradition of student activism. In addition to support for larger projects, smaller amounts will be available to supplement projects that are in keeping with the goals of the Fund. Upon completion of projects, recipients are expected to share results and insights with peers and colleagues via a presentation, publication or other means, thereby making a concrete contribution to the Alpert Medical School community.

Summer Research Assistantships in Emergency Medicine

Three Summer Research Assistantships in Emergency Medicine (SRA–EM) are available annually on a competitive basis to PLME or medical students. Students who are awarded an assistantship carry out their research project at a Brown-affiliated hospital between June and August, under the supervision and mentorship of a Brown emergency medicine faculty member (Instructor rank or above).
For the 10-week period, medical students will be paid a stipend of $3,500. Other employment is usually not authorized during the defined work-week tenure of the assistantship, and academic credit cannot be obtained for work performed under this form of support. It is permissible to use the research done during an assistantship as an element of a thesis to be presented toward a degree, and to obtain academic credit if the student decides to develop and continue the project as independent research during the academic year. Favorable consideration for an SRA–EM is based on a well-delineated research program involving experimental methods and hypotheses which are appropriate to the student's educational and research background.
