Writing Contests

The following award programs recognize medical student achievement.

2009 Francis A. Velay Humanism in Medicine Essay Contest

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is sponsoring a contest asking medical students to reflect, in 1000 words or less, on the following quote: "To most physicians, my illness is a routine incident in their rounds, while for me it's the crisis of my life. I would feel better if I had a doctor who at least perceived this incongruity." –Anatole Broyard.
First, second and third prize winters will be awarded $1000, $500, and $250 respectively and be published in the AAMC's "Academic Medicine".

7th Annual Michael E. DeBakey Medical Student Poetry Award

This annual contest sponsored by the Baylor College of Medicine is for any student currently enrolled in a U.S. medical school. Student may submit one original poem (not to exceed two pages) of any theme along with a copy of the student's ID card and a coverpage. First prize will receive $1,000, second place a cash prize of $500 and a third place recipient the prize of $250. Please see website for more entry information.

Alpha Omega Alpha Writing Contests

AΩA is offering two medical student contests:
- Helen H. Glaser Student Essay Awards: Submit an essay about nontechnical subjects related to medicine.
- Pharos Poetry Competition: Submit a poem on any subject related to medicine.

Conley Ethics Essay Contest for Medical Students

Sponsored by "Virtual Mentor," the AMA's monthly online ethics journal, this year's essay topic is on the timely question of physicians' right to refuse to provide a service or information about that service on the basis of their conscience. Essays are to be 2,000 words. The winning essayist wins $5,000 and 3 runner-up prizes of $1,000.

CSIS Smart Global Health Scholarship Essay Contest

The Center for Strategic and International Studies' Smart Global Health team is in the process of writing its influential annual report, and is sounding an open call for ideas to consider and possibly include. Currently, the center is looking for essays from 5-800 words that answer the question: "What is the most important thing the U.S. can do to improve global health over the next 15 years?" The author of the top selected essay will win a scholarship of $1,000, and the runner up will win $500. The contest is open from now through November 20th.

The American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) – Student Writing Competition

The ACLM is offering a prize of $1,000 for the following writing competitions:
- The Schwartz Award: An essay dealing with any aspect of Legal Medicine
- Hoffman Bioethics Student Writing Competition: An essay dealing with any aspect of Bioethics that is original and unpublished.

The Legible Script Literary Contest

The Legible Script is an annual literary journal published by medical students of the University of South Florida College of Medicine. The mission is to showcase the creative works of medical students around the country. All published contestants will receive two copies of the journal by mail. The categories are: Artwork & Photography, Poetry, Prose, and Personal Statements. Cash prizes are awarded to winners in each category.
