Welcome to the Program in Public Health at Brown Medical School in the Division of Biology and Medicine. This innovative Program provides an organizational and administrative structure coordinating and integrating academic, research and public service programs relevant to population health. The Program links activities across the Medical School and University academic Departments and across University-based and hospital-based research centers. In addition, the Program in Public Health represents an important link from Brown's Medical School to local, state and national governmental, public, and private health relevant entities.
The academic and research goals for the Program in Public Health are focused in the Department of Community Health which has a broad mandate in the Medical School. Offering multi-disciplinary, comprehensive programs in population-based medicine and health, the department's educational mission encompasses a rigorous graduate program in epidemiology and biostatistics, medical education, fellowship training, a Master of Public Health degree and an undergraduate concentration. The University has recently approved major growth in the program with the recruitment of up to 17 new tenure track faculty members. This growth will enhance academic programs and enhance already strong research productivity.
A predominant academic objective of the Department includes understanding and influencing factors that affect the health of human populations. The graduate program in the Department is structured along two broadly defined tracks focusing on Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Health Services Research respectively. The Department offers comprehensive course work leading to an M.S. in Epidemiology and M.S. in Biostatistics, as well as to Ph.D.s in Epidemiology and in Biostatistics. In addition, the Master of Public Health program is dedicated to developing skilled professionals who are committed to improving the health of communities by translating rigorous scientific research into sound, evidenced-based public health policy and practice.
The multi-disciplinary Program in Public Health includes nine active, nationally renowned public health research centers. Each center is home to a robust research program; in all, Brown centers currently have funding in excess of $250 million. The Program in Public Health provides substantial public service activities to organizations, agencies and residents throughout the state and region. The Program's faculty and students continue to strengthen community relationships by building upon current efforts to translate research findings into policy and practice.
The Program has strong ties to the Rhode Island Department of Health and these activities inform public policy and contribute to improving the health of the population as a whole and target populations throughout the state. These include the underserved, minority, elderly and other vulnerable members of the populace.
