Movement is universal in all living systems. The cytoskeleton proteins that determine cell shape and organization are also responsible for movement , not only of whole cells, but also of intracellular organelles and other structures. Contractile systems will be considered in detail from primitive actin based systems, through the highly organized systems of smooth muscle, skeletal muscle, heart muscle, as well specialized contractile systems including the mitotic spindle, cilia, flagella and the transport system in nerve axons. Prerequisite: BI 80 or BI 105.
