Graduate Years
Following pre-clinical, basic medical science courses, MD/PhD candidates typically spend the next three to five years completing the requirements for the PhD degree in one of the eight graduate programs in Brown’s Division of Biology and Medicine. Coursework during the PhD years varies by department.
Most programs require candidates to complete required coursework in their chosen field as well as independent laboratory research. The faculty who oversee and participate in the MD/PhD graduate years are members of the Brown University faculty with open access to University facilities and resources. They are located in a number of different sites, including on-campus facilities and research laboratories in Brown’s affiliated hospitals.
