Exit Counseling Information

Federal regulations require that all students who have received federal student loans complete an exit counseling session when they graduate, drop below half-time status, or withdraw from school. Alpert Medical School schedules exit meetings each spring for graduating fourth year medical students. The goals of this meeting are to:

  • Provide borrowers with a complete summary of their educational loans and estimated monthly payments;
  • Review repayment options and responsibilities, including grace, deferment and forbearance provisions, loan consolidation and consequences of delinquency and default;
  • Discuss basic debt management strategies, including guidelines for organizing loan paperwork;
  • Collect contact information from borrowers that is needed by the Brown Loan office and the federal government before the student separates from the university.

Borrowers receive personalized information specific to their loans, repayment schedules and debt-to-income data based upon their ultimate specialty plans. Links for most of the exit information are provided below. Exit meetings are informal, small-group sessions that allow plenty of time for individual questions. Several meetings are offered usually in April and May.

*Medical students planning to leave campus or the area prior to graduation must make plans to complete an exit counseling program. Please contact the OFA to schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience.*
