Adjustments to Student Budgets

Adjustments may be made to student budgets for the expenses listed below. Except for travel home, students must provide appropriate documentation (e.g., cancelled checks, airline tickets) for budget increases. Generally, budget adjustments are covered with the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan or alternative, private loans.

  • Travel home: an allowance will be included in your budget for two round trips home each year (one round trip for international students). The allowance varies depending upon destination.
  • Unusual medical expenses: adjustments may be made for un-reimbursed medical and dental expenses.
  • Educational debt repayment: adjustments are made if repayment of principal and/or interest is required during medical school.
  • Life insurance premiums are considered for students with dependents.
  • Child care: these expenses are considered for single parents or when a spouse is working outside the home or attending college or graduate school on a less than half-time basis.
  • Away electives: students may request increases in their budgets to cover transportation to electives out of state as well as other reasonable expenses which would not have been incurred if they were in the Providence area.
