Fellowship Training
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship began in 1989. Our mission is to : recruit outstanding Pediatricians and Emergency Physicians; create a rich and supportive clinical and academic environment which will allow fellows to aspire to lifelong goal(s) of becoming master clinicians, inspirational educators, successful academicians and effective administrators.
The fellowship is affiliated with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics. The program is sponsored by Rhode Island Hospital Graduate Medical Education and the Department of Emergency Medicine. It has been continuously accreditation by the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Pediatrics.
Hasbro Children's Hospital, the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital, is a major referral center children in Southern New England. The dedicated pediatric emergency department has an annual census of more than 50,000 annual visits. Fellows rotate through the Rhode Island Hospital and Miriam Hospital Emergency departments, which have a combined annual volume of ~150,000 visits.
The PEM experience covers the range of childhood illness including physician and hospital referrals, common childhood maladies, second opinions, fulminantly ill children and pediatric traumas. The Hasbro Emergency Department serves as the designated Level I Trauma Center for the state and has twenty-four hour pediatric and surgical subspecialty coverage. Currently, the hospital has 19 board certified pediatric emergency medicine attendings and six fellows. Graduates of the program have entered careers in academic and clinical pediatric emergency medicine at major centers including Emory, Yale, Boston Children’s Hospital, Columbia, UMASS Medical Center, University of Nevada Las Vegas, Children’s Hospital Wisconsin, UC Davis, Tufts and Elliot Hospital.
The development and refining of teaching skills is a major part of the PEM fellowship. In formal and informal settings, fellows play an integral role in the education of residents in the associated Pediatric and Emergency Medicine training programs, as well as family medicine residents, medical students and pre-hospital caregivers. Fellows also actively contribute to weekly attending/fellow conferences and board review. Fellows are active participants on departmental and hospital committees.
All fellows are required to be involved in at least one clinical or basic science research project from inception to completion. Research is accomplished through a mentoring program within and beyond the department, with a wide variety of research opportunities available. Multiple fellow research projects have been presented at national pediatric and emergency medicine conferences and published in respected journals.
A MPH program and a Master's program in Clinical and Translational Research are available at Brown University. Fellows are encouraged to consider applying for these programs. Tuition for the program is funded by the Department. One fellow is currently enrolled in the MPH program.
