Independent Programs

Students are permitted (indeed, encouraged) to design and pursue independent study programs, clinical preceptorships, and research projects at Brown and in community health institutions. The student should:

  • first consult the faculty member who is being asked to serve as sponsor;
  • fill out a proposal for an independent study project ( also available from the Clerkship Coordinator);
  • have it signed by the faculty sponsor;
  • bring it to the Director of Medical Student Affairs for approval at least two weeks before the start date of the project.

Independent study projects will not be approved retroactively. Independent study projects generally should not be taken concomitantly with other full-time clerkships. The amount of credit for part-time or longitudinal independent study projects will be determined by the Office of Student Affairs consistent with other courses and clerkships.
