The W.W. Keen Award 2009
Dr. Allan Erickson earned his AB in Biology at Stanford University in 1964 and his medical degree from Columbia University in 1968. He completed further training in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Infectious Disease at Harlem and Bellevue Hospitals in New York City. He was a physician in the Indian Health Service stationed at the Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Albuquerque, New Mexico during the Vietnam era.
Since coming to Brown University in 1975, he has focused his interest principally in teaching and has served as course leader for several important courses at Brown, including the Medicine Clerkship and the Pathophysiology sequence, where he and a few colleagues introduced problem-based learning. He helped create the Brown categorical residency program in Internal Medicine in the mid-1990s. He has twice been the recipient of the medical school's highest teaching award, the Senior Citation, and has received numerous other teaching awards from students and house staff trainees. He also has been the principle investigator for several grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs and private industry in the general area of pulmonary infections and immunity. Clinically, he has been an active pulmonologist at the VA Medical Center since his arrival in Providence, had an HIV Clinic there for many years, and was a frequent ward attending in Medicine, supervising students and medical house staff. Dr. Erickson is former Chief of Staff at the VA Medical Center (retired Feb. 2007) and is Associate Professor Emeritus (of Medicine) at Alpert Medical School.
