Artemis Joukowsky Award to Herb Kaplan
Presentation made by Artemis Joukowsky '55
It was Herbert Kaplan who directed the $100 million transformational gift to Brown Medical School from The Warren Alpert Foundation resulting in the naming of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Herbert is President and CEO of Warren Equities operating under the holding company's name, Xtra Mart, which markets fuel and other commodities at 400 service stations and convenience stores ranging from Virginia to Maine. He also serves as President of The Warren Alpert Foundation which oversees the Foundation's philanthropy.
Herbert, in his quiet and unassuming manner, teamed with Brown University's leadership to harness a portion of the legacy to be used for the creation of Brown's medical education building. As you have heard from Dean Wing, earlier today the Brown Corporation approved and gave the go ahead to transform a fine building owned by the University in Providence's former Jewelry District to provide the Medical School with an indispensible element for its future flowering and development. This alone is cause for great celebration.
On behalf of the Warren Alpert Medical School's Alumni Association, it is my honor to present you, Herb, with the award which recognizes you for your dedicated and meritorious service.
I should mention in passing that I receive letters from time to time simply addressed to Artemis Joukowsky, M.D. –a rather flattering and unexpected promotion without the obligation to DISPENSE medical services—one of the INDESPENSIBLE benefits of my long affiliation with our Medical School.
Herb… I expect you will now share that same promotion.
