AHEC Student Projects

1. Health Education at Starbirth
Darcy Broughton and Lauren Goodard
The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University

Project Goals:

  • Conduct four workshops providing essential health information.
  • Cover topics that the women themselves believe are most relevant and important.

Desired outcomes:

  • Increased knowledge of selected health topics.
  • Improved capacity for self-care and self-advocacy in the healthcare system.

2. Assessment of Food Access and Availability, Hunger, and Nutrition among the Homeless in Rhode Island

Project Goals:

  • Work in collaboration with community organizations.
  • Increase understanding of economic and cultural barriers to health.
  • Increase knowledge of homeless population in RI.
  • Assess this population to determine food, hunger and nutrition issues.
  • Increase awareness of the impact of homelessness on health.

3.  Interdisciplinary Curriculum Development Project (ICDP): Phase 3

Phase III Project Goals: 

  • To extend the work of the previous two phases and bring them to fruition:
    • Phase I showed the need for change in health care education.
    • Phase II demonstrated that health care students and faculty were interested and willing to participate in interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Phase III has as its goals the implementation of curricular change at Rhode Island's health care professional schools, and the inclusion of students and faculty at these institutions in order to ensure that this change has a lasting presence.

4. Brown Center for Children at Risk

Project Goals:

  • Immerse self within a diverse health care system.
  • Understand more about the research process and research ethics.
  • Engage in interpersonal communication with clients and community members.
  • Gain a better understanding of health care and research as a whole.

5. Creating a Survey to Assess Interpreter Utilization at Rhode Island Hospital

Project Goals (short-term):

  • Assess clinician attitudes (MD, RN, SW, etc.) toward utilization of interpreters for limited English proficiency (LEP) patients.
  • Identify bilingual clinicians to build a database of providers with foreign language skills (as required by RI law).

6. Occupational & Environmental Health & Safety Education & Clinical Experiences for Undergraduate Community Health Nursing Students

Project Goals:

  • To prepare the new nursing workforce to meet the special healthcare needs of a vulnerable working population & to provide primary care through worksite wellness programs.

7. YWCA – Summer PIP– RITA Initiative

Project Goals:

  • By implementing this program and overseeing weekly workshops of students enrolled in a summer program of alternative education to pregnant teens and young mothers, we aim to develop and maintain effective channels of communication with participants, program staff and partner agencies.
