Dear Brown Alum:

In June, we said congratulations to our 2011-2012 graduates.  You can read about the 23 clinical psychology residents and 30 postdoctoral fellows who graduated by visiting our website at: http://med.brown.edu/DPHB/. The 2012-2013 internship class will start on July 1st and postdoctoral fellows have been coming in throughout the summer.

22 clinical psychology residents have accepted postdoctoral fellowship positions for the 12-13 training year (12 will be remaining within the Brown system) and 1 clinical psychology resident accepted a position of Assistant Professor.

Scott Lilienfeld, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Emory University, gave the 15th David Barlow Oration, the Grand Rounds selected by our trainees.  His talk was entitled, “Science, Pseudoscience, and the Research Practice Gap in Mental Health.”  After the presentation, Dr. Lilienfeld met with the trainees to discuss his talk and other research questions.  Eric Reiman, M.D., (Executive Director, Banner Alzheimer’s Institute & Chief Scientific Officer, Banner Research InstituteClinical Director, Neurogenomics Division, Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), Professor of Psychiatry, University of ArizonaDirector, Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium) was the keynote speaker at Research Day this past March. Several of our trainees won awards at the 15th annual Research Day. Among our clinical psychology residents, Robert Dvorak won 1st place for “Affect States Moderate the Relationship Between Implicit Smoking Attitudes and Craving," and Laura Zahodne won 2nd place for "Neuropsychological Correlates and Functional Impact of Apathy and Depression in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment." In the postdoc group, Selby Conrad won 2nd place for "Gender Differences in Domestic Violence Exposure Among a Juvenile Court Clinic Sample."

Kelly D. Brownell, Ph.D., (Internship Class of 75-76) Received the Award for Distinguished Scientific Applications of Psychology as well as the APA Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Psychology in 2012.  Dr. Brownell also spoke at Brown’s Public Health Research Day.

Jennifer Johnson, Ph.D. (Postdoctoral Fellowship Class 04-06) Received the Early Career Achievement Award, Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR) in 2012

Edward Selby, Ph.D., (Internship Class of 10-11) Received the Distinguished Student Research in Clinical Psychology, Division 12, Society of Clinical Psychology in 2011.

Scott Powers, Ph.D., (Internship Class of 90-91 & Postdoctoral Fellowship Class of 91-92) Received the Martin P. Levin Mentorship Award, Division 54, SPP in 2011.
