Research Training Program in Treatment Research

Ivan Miller, PhD, Director

The Treatment Research Training Program (pending renewal) prepares 3 post-residency psychiatrists, post-doctoral psychologists, and behavioral scientists to conduct independent research in the area of treatment research. The Program is a two-year fellowship in which research fellows work under the guidance of experienced mentors. It includes didactic work, participation in ongoing funded projects, and independent research.

The program covers five broad areas of research training in treatment for: 1) mood disorders; 2) anxiety disorders; 3) PTSD and personality disorders; 4) addictive disorders and comorbidity; and 5) childhood and adolescent disorders.

A formal didactic curriculum complements hands-on research and supervision. It includes opportunities for training in: treatment research methods/design and statistical analysis; individual and family therapy, and pharmacologic treatment strategies; the ethical conduct of research, and grant writing. The trainees’ individual needs are also satisfied by formal courses at Brown University and by the guidance of appropriate mentors.

Research Trainees select an established senior mentor whose area of research corresponds with their own interests. The primary mentors for the Research Training Program are:
