Overview of Training in the DPHB
The DPHB provides Brown medical students with educational opportunities in Psychiatry. The DPHB also supports three psychiatry residencies, two psychiatry fellowships, a psychology internship program, and seven postdoctoral training programs. These programs continue to flourish, in large part due to the unwavering support, excellent resources and opportunities available through the DPHB’s network of affiliated hospitals.
The Child Psychiatry training programs includes one of the six original Triple Board programs. The General Psychiatry Residency attracts a talented cadre of medical students in a highly competitive market. The General Psychiatry Residency also serves as an essential element of the Triple Board Residency, as well as the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship , and the combined Neurology-Psychiatry Residency.
The predoctoral Clinical Psychology Internship is one of the most highly regarded programs in the country. The Clinical Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowships recently became only one of a handful accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The DPHB also administers seven NIH-sponsored Research Fellowship programs. Together, the two fellowship programs provide a fertile ground for future research leaders in our department and other departments in the country.
The faculty overseeing these training programs are united by a passion for educational excellence, as evidenced by an abiding commitment to ensuring consistency of educational quality, increasing the opportunities for and actualizing the process of mentoring, and providing trainees more opportunity for collegial interaction through coordinated education and modeling by senior educators. This cohesiveness among the training faculty leadership is reflected in the smooth transitions trainees can make from one program to the next. The General Psychiatry residents easily move into fellowship training in child-adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry or research training (approximately one-third). Typically one-third to one-half of the graduates of the psychology internship are recruited into Brown postdoctoral positions. This tradition of educational excellence has created an international reputation for the department, and students from all over the world compete for internships, fellowships, and residency positions.
