Donna Parker, ScD

Director of Community Health Research
Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Epidemiology

Dr. Parker is a cardiovascular epidemiologist and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Epidemiology at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is also the Director of Community Health and Research in the Center for Primary care and Prevention. Dr. Parker has a long history of collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams on epidemiologic research and smoking cessation. She is currently the PI on a COPD grant entitled "Translating the GOLD COPD Guidelines into primary care practice" and has been involved in conducting both patient and provider focus groups to discuss the knowledge, attitude and behaviors regarding COPD. She recently was the Chairperson on a COPD conference entitled, "The Changing Face of COPD: From Bedside to the Community to help increase the current knowledge base of COPD diagnosis and management in primary care practices. She has published peer reviewed articles related to cardiovascular disease, primary care and smoking cessation. She is also a Women's Health Initiative investigator and is a member of the Scientific Interest Group in CVD. She has also been involved in smoking cessation studies with a variety of populations including a recent smoking cessation clinical trial to enhance smoking abstinence rates among individuals following release from a tobacco free prison. Additionally, she has been involved in several smoking intervention trials for pregnant and postpartum women. New England SCRIPT, a smoking cessation RCT for under served pregnant women, was very successful in recruitment and smoking cessation rates; Postpartum Maintenance of Abstinence from Tobacco, tested whether a telephone counseling intervention could maintain postpartum abstinence among women who quit at the start of or during their pregnancy; and Reducing ETS Exposure of Pregnant Women and Newborns assessed an intervention (home-based tailored videotapes) to help pregnant women maximize their pregnancy outcome and their new infants health through reduction in exposure to ETS.
